Within moments of meeting her, you will learn that Abbie is extremely animated and has an incredible imagination. In school, her academic performance is outstanding and she continues to impress her teachers. However, friendships are difficult for her to develop and maintain due to her Asperger Syndrome. After being introduced to the Heartspring CARE Program, 9-year-old Abbie attended Camp SSTAR for the first time in 2009 and was able to interact with others who face similar social challenges. One of the greatest goals her mother, Suzy, has for her is to make and keep friends. “She doesn’t seem to relate to her peers, [my goal is] for her to become more independent and to learn to be a good friend.”
