Autism Resources

Team Dylan

Almost a year ago our grandson Dylan was diagnosed with high functioning autism and severe ADHD. As a family we knew very little about this disorder, so we started searching the internet, reading articles, and found a few books. We also started looking for doctors who knew about the latest treatments or anything that might give us a better understanding of his unique world. As parents and grandparents, we understand that it is our responsibility to do whatever possible to provide the best life possible for our children. Dylan’s mom and dad spent a lot of time on the phone trying to find a DAN doctor they could afford. As they discovered, the resources weren’t as readily available as one might think, and in turn, they both became very frustrated.

When we read about the Autism CARE Walk we were very excited. For the first time since Dylan’s diagnosis we felt like we could actually do something productive and beneficial for this very important cause. Even better we could do it as a family. Kelly and Mandy had visited Heartspring earlier in the year and had been extremely impressed; however Dylan had already started in the Early Childhood Program through the Derby School System. He had been in his class for a couple months and was doing so well. He loved his new school, and they were reluctant to change, something Dylan isn’t fond of. They kept in contact with Heartspring and were continually amazed at the assistance that they were given. It has been said that seeing is believing, and from the moment we registered for the walk, (apparently something I had done by mistake several times) I saw exactly why his parents had been so impressed. Mia, director of web services, was on the phone calling me to offer her assistance, and every other staff member we encountered was just as helpful. The CARE Walk was such a wonderful experience from start to finish. What a true blessing Heartspring is for Wichita and our city should feel very proud.

We would like to personally thank all of the staff at Heartspring; you did a marvelous job! Our team would also like to thank everyone who pledged to TeamDylan; the response was so overwhelming. With great people like all of you opening your hearts and pocket books, Heartspring will continue to make such a difference in children’s lives.
