The first off campus transitionary home has been opened just two miles from the Heartspring campus and three currently enrolled students have already moved in. While their curiculum goals remain the same, the focus in this home is to prepare the students to transition to an adult placement. Emphasis is placed on building home skills such as how to sort and wash clothing, buy groceries and other home supplies and meal preparation.
The Heartspring CARE Program has begun weekly meetings for SSTAR Scouts. This group consists of school age children on the autism spectrum. The focus is fun activities with an emphasis on social skill building and peer to peer interaction. The groups are divided by age level and meet once a week for six weeks.
The 2010 ADDY Awards dinner and presentation took place February 9. Heartspring Marketing Department took home two awards. The Silver ADDY was awarded for the Heartspring 75th Anniversary Commemorative Book and Heartspring’s Dialogue received bronze.
The Autism CARE Walk at Heartspring, an autism awareness and fundraising event, will take place April 10 on the Heartspring campus. There will be family activities, resource and vendor booths and food following the walk. Registration is free and participants who raise at least $25 will receive a t-shirt and prize bag. The Heartspring Hearing center will offer a free hearing education seminar March 24th from 1:30 - 2:30 pm in the Heartspring Conference Center. Additionally, the annual Heartspring Hearing Center Open House will take place April 12 - 16 and will offer free hearing screenings and hearing aid checks and cleanings. A representative from Dyanvox, a maker of assistive communication devices, will be conducting free training sessions in the Heartspring Conference Center. These sessions will take place once a month and will include access to editing software and demonstrations of different products.
