To raise awareness about the importance of oral health, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month each February. The ADA promotes developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits to help children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. At Heartspring our teachers, therapists and medical staff are keenly aware of caring for all of our children’s dental needs. In this issue of Heartspring Connections, you will learn more about our efforts to help children with special needs effectively care for their dental health.
International Students Welcome. Heartspring is now certified by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP), granting Heartspring the opportunity to offer special education services to children from other countries. There are 150 million children with disabilities in the world and only 2% receive any services, according to best estimates. |

Tips on Brushing Teeth from Occupational Therapy. For some children, brushing their teeth is the least preferred activity of their self-care routine. Some tips to helping children brush their teeth might include: using child-friendly supplies (youth sized brushes, flavored toothpaste, toothbrushes with music), visual supports to help young children navigate the process, modeling with siblings and friends (let them imitate), and guidance from a caregiver. For best results allow children to practice this skill 2-3 times a day during their daily toothbrushing routine.

Did you know that in 2002 Nintendo invested more than $140 million in research and development? The U.S. Federal Government spent less than half as much on research and innovation in education. Through the Heartspring Award for Innovation and Creativity in Education, our hope is to encourage originality and pioneering efforts in special education across the nation and around the world. If you are someone or know anyone who epitomizes creativity in the classroom, tell us. We want to share these stories with the world.
