Welcome

Heartspring | 75 YearsAs we welcome 2009, we do so with increased enthusiasm on the Heartspring campus. We are officially embarking on our 75th year of service to children with special needs. Seventy-five years! Throughout the year we will celebrate this milestone with all of you who support our mission.

Our 75th Anniversary theme is Still Growing which reflects our ever-evolving programs, geographical reach, depth of support and endless dedication to children with special needs.

In this first anniversary year issue of Heartspring Connections we hope you enjoy a look into the lives of just a few of the thousands of people who have made Heartspring a place of hope for children with special needs since 1934. As we enter such a momentous year we are asking for assistance from those that know us best, our former clients, donors, family members, supporters and employees. We want to know your story.

Make a Difference

Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA)For sixty years the ladies of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) have been making a difference in the lives of children at Heartspring. Since 1948, their support for children with special needs has come through countless volunteer hours, over $200,000 worth of gift in kind items and over $1 million in cash. These philanthropic ladies recently convened on the Heartspring campus for a weekend of fun and reminiscing, officially called the ESA Tea and Tour. You can make a difference too.

Heartspring School

BrandonBrandon was a familiar face at Heartspring from 1996-2003, where he attended as a residential student. He came to Heartspring because of his unique needs, as well as his skills. Brandon was very bright, but prior to Heartspring, he was placed in a behaviorally challenged classroom because there wasn't a more appropriate place for him. Until Heartspring, that is. Learn more about Brandon.

JasonIn 1977 Jason was two years old. Two years and two months to be exact, an age when most children are starting to talk. But Jason had not. A pediatric neurologist suggested that Jason’s parents, Nikki and John, take him to Heartspring, known then as the Institute of Logopedics. Jason immediately started in the Clinical Infant Stimulation Program (CISP). Learn more about Jason.

The Evolution of Autism

the evolution of AutismThe word autism comes from the Greek word autos, meaning self.  The term describes conditions in which a person is removed from social interaction – hence---an isolated self.  While autism seems to be a fairly new diagnosis, eighteenth century descriptions of behaviors and characteristics similar to autism exist.  Unfortunately for many families, initial understanding of autism didn’t evolve until 1911 with Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler coined the term autism in his work with schizophrenic patients. Learn more about autism from Heartspring's director of the CARE program.

From the President

Gary SingletonIt isn’t every day that an organization celebrates its 75th Anniversary. As a non-profit, we are especially proud of the achievements of our employees and clients, past and present. Over the last 75 years our name has changed, but our constant drive to give all children with special needs a chance to succeed is unwavering. Every organization hopes for longevity, and this year we hope you will be a part of our legacy.
