Heartspring partners with Barnes and Noble for interactive storytime. Parents looking to provide a new and engaging experience for their children are invited to attend a special interactive story time offered monthly by Heartspring staff members at the Bradley Fair Barnes and Noble Booksellers.

Heartspring 75:Still Growing
Heartspring, formerly the Institute of Logopedics, is embarking on its 75th year of service as a worldwide center for children with special needs. As we enter such a momentous year we are asking for assistance from those that know us best; our former clients, donors, board members, family members, supporters and employees. We want to know your story.

Norwich SchoolSpecial thanks to all the students and staff who participated in the Norwich School CARE Walk. The school spent time during Autism Awareness Month in April helping their students understand autism and organized special walks around the neighborhood on April 20 and April 23. The whole school, grades pre-K through 12, participated in the project raising $327.25. Teacher Tammy Goebel says, “Our main goal was to make students aware of the diagnoses and to get students involved in community service.”

Do you love Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit? Do you think you know a lot about the history of the Institute of Logopedics/Heartspring? As we celebrate 75 years of service we want to test your knowledge. Each month we will ask a multiple-choice question. Everyone who responds with the correct answer will be entered into a drawing to receive a prize. All winners will then be put in to a drawing for the grand prize; two tickets to the 75th Anniversary Gala in September at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Wichita. Answer May's question.

Welcome

Each May we celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month. This annual event provides opportunities to raise awareness about communication disorders and to promote treatment that can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding or hearing. We also take this time to remember that 75 years ago, Dr. Martin Palmer founded Heartspring as the University of Wichita’s Department of Speech Sciences. It was his vision of helping children with communication deficits that built the foundation for our organization - helping thousands of children with special needs achieve success through therapy, education and love.

The Autism CARE Walk at Heartspring

The Autism CARE Walk at HeartspringThe 2009 Autism CARE Walk at Heartspring took place April 4. Over 650 walkers braved the Kansas wind to participate in the live walk on the Heartspring campus. It was overwhelming to see this amazing group walking together to raise awareness for their children and friends with autism. Virtual walkers from 16 states also participated in the walk, bringing the total number of participants to 900 individuals. After the walk, families enjoyed food and beverages, activities and resources provided by local vendors. Thanks to all our walkers, teams, sponsors and supporters, this year’s Autism CARE Walk raised almost $60,000 to support programs at Heartspring benefiting children with autism!

Congratulations to the 2009 Autism CARE Walk top fundraising teams and individuals!

TevisWhen LaTasha gave birth to Tevis on August 27, 2001, she knew there was a chance he could be deaf or hard of hearing because her older son was born two years earlier with a sensorineural hearing loss in both ears.  Tests were completed following Tevis’ birth and confirmed that he also had hearing loss in both ears. He also found gad strabismus, torticollis, and mild seizures at birth.

Early Literacy Project

Early Literacy ProjectThanks to a generous grant from Target, Heartspring therapists and clinicians are going out into the Wichita community and conducting free hearing and speech screenings at area preschools and daycar centers. Heartspring's Target Literacy Project is a valuable tool that allows Heartspring to take professionals to local day-care centers and preschools to screen children ages three to six in areas of speech and language, hearing and literacy. The addition of the literacy component has allowed the teachers at preschools and day-care centers to further understand the language development of the children they work with. This screening helps teachers know which children have been identified as needing some extra attention in language and literacy. The teachers are then able to discuss this information with the child's parents. Supplemental material helps facilitate this awareness and all children who are screened receive a booklet entitled A Child Becomes a Reader published by the National Institute for Literacy. Inside this booklet, ideas are given for playing, talking and reading with a child to help him or her "become a good reader and writer later in life". This is a great tool for teachers and parents to learn how to help these skills develop, in a fun and interactive way. Learn more about Target Early Literacy Screenings or view our screening statistics for 2008. To request an Early Literacy Screening at your site, contact Kristina Baker at 316.634.8881 or at kbaker@heartspring.org.

From the President

Gary SingletonEveryday at Heartspring we see children learn to communicate with their world through new and innovative technologies. What was once a source of frustration is now a cause for joy as children have the capability to share their wants and needs thanks to a variety of alternative and augmentative communication devices. Hearing aid technologies have also be expanded to enhance the quality of life for all people living with a hearing loss. Through free screenings, a state-of-the-art hearing center, assistive listening device center, caring speech-language pathologists and audiologists, and learning opportunities, everyone who enters our doors with a speech or hearing deficit is given the chance to improve their quality of life.
