Welcome
October is National Physical Therapy Month, so it is only appropriate that we recognize and thank not only our outstanding physical therapists at Heartspring, but all therapists across the nation helping children with special needs increase mobility and gross motor skills, making a positive impact on their lives. It is the dedication of these specialists that creates successful outcomes for children with disabilities.
Outcomes

WyattWith an abundance of family support, Wyatt can't help but succeed at therapy. Wyatt’s parents Susan and David found out that he had Down syndrome during her pregnancy in 2002. After hearing the news, Susan immediately met with families who have children with Down syndrome and attended therapies with them to gain information and resources. It was then that she found out about Heartspring. Moving from a much larger city on the east coast, Susan and David were pleasantly surprised to find such a wonderful resource for children with disabilities in Wichita.

School Outcome
ChanceChance, an energetic eight year old has been receiving physical therapy since arriving at the Heartspring School earlier this year. Currently, he is working on a set of goals aimed at increasing his coordination and balance.  Chance is now able to go up and down steps with a handrail independently. He is also focusing on running and controlling his body. >

Pediatric Services
MarizMariz began physical therapy at Heartspring at age six with a strong desire to walk by himself. Diagnosed at 15 months with cerebral palsy, he was fast and efficient at walking with his walker. Mariz was afraid to stand by himself, taking small ‘baby steps’ with full support. On the treadmill, Denise Begnoche, physical therapist, has been successfully teaching him to take longer strides. >

SamanthaSometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince. Samantha Cannon worked in several fields before finding her “prince” of a job as a paraeducator working with children with special needs. Learn more about Samantha.

Make A Difference
TreadmillOrganizations support Heartspring, help purchase children’s therapy equipment. Various organizations including Epsilon Sigma Alpha, MDRT Foundation and Kiwanis have pitched in to provide necessary therapy equipment for children with special needs. Heartspring Pediatric Services help over 600 children each year through occupational, speech and physical therapies. These gifts enable all Heartspring children to achieve. >

From the President
Gary W. Singleton, Ph.D.Because of the tireless effort of the Heartspring physical therapy staff, we have witnessed many miracles – a five year old daughter embracing her mother after taking her first independent steps into her arms, a young boy who is determined to be independent with the encouragement of his therapist and a 10 year old girl with cerebral palsy riding a bicycle without training wheels, an activity her mom thought she’d never see. It is the staff at Heartspring that makes us successful, and we are fortunate to have skilled therapists who seek to help every child achieve.

Gary W. Singleton, Ph.D.
