  Visual Schedule

  The purpose of a visual schedule is to let the student know either visually or tactilly, what they can expect to occur throughout their day. Benefits of using visual supports include:

  1. Increased independence
  2. Provides a method to introduce new skills
  3. Can stimulate communication by asking questions throughout the day.
  4. Capitalizes on students visual strengths
  5. Provides structure
• Transition Board

  Transition Boards

  The purpose of transition boards is to lessen the student's difficulty with transitions/change by providing them a way to know what is coming next. Transition boards let the student know the beginning and end of what he is doing. They also allow adults to help with priming by gesturing to the transition board and saying "It is almost time for...." It can be effectively used as a quick reference for the student and staff for what the student is working towards.

• Cue Card

  Cue Cards

  Cue Cards are short and concise. They are less invasive than a verbal reminder or prompt. Cue cards are often used to remind the student of expecations, rules, or self-regulation steps.

• Planned Activity Training

  Planned Activity Training

  These visual supports are written in either 1st or 3rd person. They can be directional, describe positive and negative consequences and they might be referred to during an activity. A planned activity training lays out predictable expectations for the student and adult.

• Social Story

  Social Stories

  In a Social Story, the perspective of the student is taken in order to explain social information. These visual supports are short, individualized stories that help students understand and formulate appropriate responses in a targeted environment. A Social Story describes more than it directs, is written with a positive tone and flexible language. They often help answer the "wh" questions of the situation or environment to help prepare the student for what they are going to experience.

  Choice boards allow a student to visually know what their options are and make a choice from what is available. Choice boards can be made with 2 or more pictures or objects.
