Danya was born full term and her mother did not have any complications during pregnancy. As a baby, her parents noticed that she was not meeting the usual milestones - she did not sit up, pull to stand or crawl when others her age were. She was diagnosed with low muscle tone by her family doctor and began services through Rainbows United, another early childhood program in Wichita. At 3 yrs, 8 months of age, Danya was just learning to walk with a walker and was referred to Heartspring to utilize the partial weightbearing/treadmill training equipment. Heartspring physical therapist Denise Begnoche evaluated Danya and suggested that she return to the pediatric neurologist for further diagnostic workup. She was subsequently evaluated by a geneticist in Kansas City. She has continued to attend weekly physical therapy sessions at Heartspring and took her first 4 steps unassisted to her mother in May of 2005 at the age of 5.

The joy felt by her parents was indescribable. Danya’s self confidence sky rocketed and the doors to independence were opened for her. Although she continues to wear long leg braces, Danya walks everywhere with standby assistance and only a few falls. She is learning new skills, such as pedaling a tricycle and passing a basketball, and she continues to use the treadmill in physical therapy to build strength and endurance. Today Danya is seven years old and walking alone with little or no assistance. She has blossomed as a young girl and is finding a whole new world to explore. Watch Danya's video outcome.
