Heartspring's Target Literacy Screening Project has screened a grand total of 752 children since May 2006.
Children with language learning difficulties comprise the single largest disability category within education. Eight to twelve percent of all preschool children have some form of speech or language impairment.
The most recent screenings, starting in January 2008, have included a literacy screening component in addition to screenings for speech/language and hearing.
Results of our own screenings:
Out of 367 screened children…
64 (17%) had results that indicated the need for further speech/language evaluation
25 (7%) had results that indicated the need for hearing follow-up.
17 (5%) failed the literacy screening
25 (7%) failed the speech/language portion and the literacy screening.
2 (1%) failed the hearing portion and the literacy screening.
8 (2%) failed the hearing and speech/language portion and passed the literacy screening.
