For some children, brushing their teeth is the least preferred activity of their self-care routine. Some tips to helping children brush their teeth might include: using child-friendly supplies (youth sized brushes, flavored toothpaste, toothbrushes with music), visual supports to help young children navigate the process, modeling with siblings and friends (let them imitate), and guidance from a caregiver. For best results allow children to practice this skill 2-3 times a day during their daily toothbrushing routine.
If your child does not tolerate brushing well, give breaks in between each area of the mouth where they may be having difficulty. Allow the child time to recover and return to the task when they are ready for more. Some students may prefer a vibration or battery operated toothbrush to stimulate their teeth and gums. Parents may also be interested in trying timers and pencil grips to increase handle size/improve stability.
Each child is different, but keep these suggestions in mind; they just might do the trick.
