Speech - Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Augmentative and alternative communication consists of supplementing or replacing a student’s natural speech. At Heartspring, we use augmentative and alternative communication to help our students learn to communicate effectively and efficiently. The student’s team examines multiple skills to determine what modes of communication might be successful. Such skills include fine motor, scanning and language skills along with motivation and gross motor stability. Communication systems can include objects, pictures, simple speech generating devices, or more complex dynamic screen devices to help students communicate what they want, need, or feel more appropriately. Augmentative and alternative communication requires ongoing assessment for growth, as well as ongoing training of staff to help the student be successful.
