Saturday Night Fireworks

Saturday night by the river in Changsha is a busy time as there is a weekly fireworks display. Our hosts worked hard to find a restaurant on the river that was not already fully booked. We had a delightful dinner over looking the river and enjoyed a magnificent display of fireworks. It was very hot, mucky, and crowded by the river and finding a taxi back to the hotel was a challenge. The first taxi graciously went to the Heartspring team, and Hope and our hosts followed later.

Dinner on Sunday night was with the leadership from an important disability federation that controls the distribution of funding for various organizations. They chose a Chinese restaurant with a western menu. Their thoughtfulness was most appreciated though we may have been among the first foreigners to order off of that menu. As it turned out, the western menu was very small, and they only had one of some items and none of others. The server staff worked hard to get everything right, but they were short on experience and readily remarked that they learned a lot from the feedback they welcomed from our group. Also attending the dinner was the father of relatively high functioning son on the spectrum. It was discouraging to learn of his harsh physical approach to teaching his son and not so sure that that will change as the result of the dinner discussion.

Hi, Gary, Peggy, Danica and Megan!

My heartfelt thanks for everything you're doing. I've only been to Changsha once, also in the humid summer, so can appreciate the weather you're having. I suspect you're hand laundering clothes and hanging them in your room -- like watching paint dry. /;-)

The stories are touching. IMO, there's no better way to strengthen our friendship with China than to care for their children. God bless and safe travels. Hope you have a little time to relax and enjoy China.
