Heartspring had the pleasure of hosting the Honorable Gertrude nya Mkandawire Mhango from Malawi, South Africa and her sponsor, Marilyn Yoon. Many wonder why Heartspring has an international outreach but one would only need to hear the story told by Gertrude nya Mkandawire Mhango once to fully understand the importance of each organization in America, for or not for profit, doing what they can to help children around the world in any way possible.
After touring Heartspring and remarking about the wonderful facilities and services we provide our children, Gertrude shared with us the stark comparison against the children in Malawi. The HIV-Aids crisis has produced thousands upon thousands of orphans. These children are frequently parented by other children due to the death of both parents from the disease. In Malawi they are searching for life and the very necessities we take for granted are a luxury for them. Our infrastructure provides us with running water and plenty to eat upon demand. Our poverty is to them great wealth. We all need water and food to live. In Malawi, they may consume one small meal of corn porridge and the daily search for water is indeed a search for life. They may walk for miles just to find whatever water they can for their families to drink. In spite of the arduous task involved with surviving in their country, Gertrude is establishing programs to feed and educate her people. These programs involve other organizations right here in Kansas. Trees for Life, an agency that helps plant trees around the world, helped to plant banana trees in Malawi. They’re eagerly awaiting the first fruits from their trees. Gertrude shared with us that Malawians are warm and friendly and eager to learn how to better their state of life. Heartspring wants to help in this effort any way we can. In the near future, we will provide more information on Gertrude, her beloved country and their search for life.
