Speech-Language Pathologist Cori Durham’s career at Heartspring started when she was a therapy aide while completing her Bachelor of Arts in communication sciences at Wichita State. Cori held a number of positions in the organization, in addition to assisting therapists, including obtaining insurance authorizations and benefits and intake and scheduling for Dr. Valerie Kerschen, developmental pediatrician. During her time with the organization, Cori realized working one-on-one with children with special needs as a speech-language pathologist was her true passion, so she returned to Wichita State to get her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology.
After graduating, Cori immediately returned to Heartspring, this time with her dream job as a speech-language pathologist. This career choice gave her the chance to impact the families and children Heartspring serves in a different way than before. Cori sees her work as an opportunity to provide children a way to express their wants and needs, which can open the doors to a number of other opportunities throughout their lives. She enjoys being able to help each child reach his or her full potential in order to become a successful, happy and functional member of society.
Cori is always looking for new ways to expand her knowledge base to best serve her clients. Recently, she completed an animated literacy workshop during a conference hosted by Heartspring. Cori learned how important music, movement and literature are to a child’s vocabulary and language development which added another perspective to use in her therapy sessions. In 2015, Cori also became a certified Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) therapist. PROMPT is a tactile-kinesthetic approach that is typically used for children with verbal apraxia to physically show them how each sound feels and is produced. However, it can be used for a variety of other diagnoses as well. She is currently completing additional research on this approach with children with childhood apraxia of speech. As part of this research, she records every session with one of her clients so that she can show the progress this child makes over time using the PROMPT techniques.
In her free time, Cori enjoys spending time with close family and friends and crafting.
