Meet Our Team

Shelby Layne

Assistant Director of Residential Services


Assistant Director of Residential Shelby Layne has been an important part of the Heartspring team since 2005. While her roles in the organization have changed over time, one thing has stayed the same, her dedication to Heartspring students and their families.

Shelby’s career at Heartspring began as a home paraeducator. She had a connection with the students and families she worked with immediately. She said this role taught her compassion, patience and a greater understanding of the world than she could ever hope for. While she was a para, she also took on the role of being peer mentor, training new paraeducators and giving them advice to guide them through their career. From there, she moved into more of a leadership position as the home coordinator assistant. She then took all of her experience in the homes to a staff trainer position where she made sure new employees were properly trained and then to a quality assurance coordinator role where she made sure that all programs were implemented properly. Finally, in 2016, Shelby moved to the assistant director of residential service position where she supports home supervisors and paraeducators and helps develop new leaders at Heartspring, among many other duties.

Throughout her time at Heartspring, Shelby has used her creativity and drive to create new opportunities for the students. In the spring of 2016 she took over Boys’ Group. The social club allows students to participate in activities like fishing and games to foster teamwork and communications skills. She also played an integral role in creating “Trent’s View of the Zoo,” a coloring book one of our students created. She helped organize and facilitate the efforts, involving people from different departments across the organization. By selling the coloring books at Heartspring, she was able to help this student turn his talents into something profitable for him and his family. She’s also been essential in helping our students become involved in the community, setting up special visits from and trips to Central Christian Academy, the Sedgwick County Zoo and Exploration Place. This is also part of her new job as the assistant director of residential.

To assist her in her new position, Shelby took a course at Wichita State called “Manager’s Toolbox” in 2016. She completed different activities that allowed her to learn how to become a better leader.

Shelby has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Wichita State University. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, rock climbing, boating, hiking and shooting her crossbow.
