Classroom Lead

The Lead Paraeducator for the Classrooms is responsible for supervising the classroom paraeducators and assisting the teacher with coordination of student services, plans, and care. The Lead Paraeducator will support the teacher in efforts to ensure the students are safe and receive quality care, that instructional programs are implemented effectively, and that the classroom is maintained to meet or exceed licensing regulations and Heartspring standards.

Job Description:

Primary Functions:
  • Serve as a paraeducator in assigned classroom
  • Support the classroom teacher in monitoring the implementation of student schedules, instructional programming, and Individual Treatment Plans (ITPs) to ensure consistency and quality of programs
  • Report and maintain monthly student data in absence of teacher
  • Monitor and support classroom staff in absence of teacher in areas of student coverage, maintaining programs and schedules, and ensuring that students are safe
  • Support medical office staff in communicating student medication changes to team members
  • Contact and report to appropriate administrators and parents any accidents, special incidents, use of emergency procedures including restraint or seclusion/time-out in absence of teacher
  • Help train new paraeducators in the classroom if Classroom Coach is not available
  • Report inappropriate actions and/or policy violations to teacher
  • Prompt and regular attendance is required for this position
Secondary Functions:
  • Demonstrate positive classroom communication and attitude
  • Notify teacher when training and support are needed
  • Check voicemail and email communication in absence of teacher, and respond under the direction of the teacher
  • Ensure classroom visitors are greeted and made to feel welcome
  • Complete other duties as assigned
Educational, Training, and Licensure Requirements:
  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • 6 Months of consecutive employment at Heartspring¬†
  • Must successfully complete all required orientation and training conducted by Heartspring staff
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certification¬†
  • First Aid & CPR certification
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
  • Able to perform significant, prolonged, and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, bending, twisting, reaching, and kneeling
  • Regular lifting of up to 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds
  • Occasional exposure to infectious disease, parasites, bodily fluids, and blood-borne pathogens
  • Potential exposure to physical contact from students, including slapping, hitting, punching, kicking, head-butting, and biting
  • Occasional exposure to all weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow/ice
  • Mandatory use of Heartspring-standard personal protective equipment
  • May require use of personal protective equipment, including gloves, helmets, arm guards, and leg guards
