The Best Day of the Year: Spirit Day of Giving

The holidays came early this year for Heartspring students as they gathered in the gym for one of our favorite days of the year, Spirit Day of Giving. There were plenty of smiles and shouts of excitement as students filled in class by class to open their giant bags of gifts which included everything from snacks to roller skates to an MP3 player. The excitement was all thanks to the generosity of the employees on Team Spirit of Spirit AeroSystems.

This generosity is a regular occurrence for the organization. When they aren’t building airplanes and space vehicles, they are building relationships and connections in the community.

“At Spirit AeroSystems, being part of the community and giving back is part of our core values and our mission statement,” Kristin Robert, Spirit AeroSystems vice president, said. “One other reason why Spirit employees are so encouraged to donate to Heartspring is because we have a lot of employees ourselves who have children that have been provided services through Heartspring.”

Team Spirit has been a part of Spirit Day of Giving for 17 years. It’s a favorite day for the students and employees of Heartspring. It’s also a favorite day for the Spirit staff members. They work hard to get the students the gifts, sometimes adopting a whole classroom and shopping for them.

“The best part of giving is seeing the smiles on the kid's faces," Robert said. “The students bring such joy. It’s heartwarming and humbling to see how the simplest things can make them so happy.”

To make things even better, even though Spirit Day of Giving is just one day, the joy they provide the students can last all year round. Whether it’s a new favorite pair of shoes they practically sleep in or a new stuffed animal, the gifts and the support the Spirit employees give to the students will be felt for a long time.
