Discussing sex ed with those with autism and other complex needs

Parents and caregivers often ask about how to prepare their child with autism to learn about sexual health and relationships.

Our CARE Coordinator, Tristen Moore, shared the Sex Ed for Self-Advocates guide from the Organization for Autism Research (OAR).

This guide is a sexuality and sex education resource written specifically for those with autism aged 15 and up. Individuals with autism don’t always have the same opportunities to learn about sexuality and sex in ways that work for them, so OAR created this guide as a starting point to change that.

In each of the nine sections of the guide, self-advocates can read articles and watch brief videos before testing their knowledge about a given topic and practicing new skills.
